1 cup boiling water
1 tbsp. bicarbonate of soda
1 cup dates
1 1/2 cups flour
1 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup chopped nuts
2 tbsp. melted margarine
Add the bicarbonate of soda to boiling water.
In a bowl add the dates and pour the boiling water over them.
Allow to cool.
Remove the dates and chop them. Retain the liquid.
Sift the flour. Stir in the sugar and nuts, then the melted margarine, dates and the liquid that they were soaked in. Bake in a 9 inch x 4 inch loaf tin or an 8 inch square tin at 350° F on the centre shelf for 40 minutes.
